ARCO Nepal (Amphibian and Reptile Conservation of Nepal) is a conservation organization concerned with the protection of reptiles and amphibians in Nepal. Nepal is a unique area with a large number of endangered species, of which especially the turtles are having a hard time. Loss of habitat, illegal trade and poaching have pushed many species to the edge of extinction. Conservation was not a priority in Nepal for a long time, because it was not clear how species were doing, and what value these animals have for the environment.
ARCO’s hard work in Spain has allowed them to bring a great deal of knowledge and enthusiasm to Nepal. Here they established a large-scale shelter and breeding center. ARCO Nepal also started offering education to the local population and has actively involved policymakers in the project. ARCO Nepal not only makes a significant contribution to the survival of species but has become an important source of employment as well.
The Herpetofauna Foundation has been involved in this project from its start in 1997. After many years of hard work ARCO Nepal is now seen as an important center for conservation and knowledge in the region. We are very happy that we have been able to contribute to this important project. Our support for ARCO will continue, as this organization depends fully on gifts and donations.
