Educational children's books

The Herpetofauna Foundation is very involved in educating the next generation. One of the tools we use for this are educational children’s book which we develop ourselves. With these books we inform children between the ages of 4 and 12 about animals and their threats.

Astro, the Tortoise That Became a Hero
Our first title, 'Astro, the Tortoise That Became a Hero' is a story about a tiny tortoise whose father is taken by a poacher. He decides to keep his head up and go rescue his father. To do so Astro must go to the big city. During his journey he makes new friends who all have their own reasons to accompany Astro. It is an exciting story with a lot of information about animals and conservation. The story was written by Rogier van Rossem and the drawings were made by Peter van de Wiel. The book is for sale in two languages in our webshop (Dutch and English).

The Adventure of Venom
The second title is specially written for children in areas where venomous snakes are found. Unfortunately, many children that live in these areas suffer snake bites, resulting in severe trauma or even death. This is often due to a lack of understanding of how to act around snakes. Moreover, there are many prejudices about these animals, and the application of traditional medicine might make the treatment of a bite even more difficult. In 'The Adventure of Venom' we aim to educate these children by taking them along various venomous animals, telling them what venom is and how anti-venom is made. A large part of the book is devoted to preventative and first aid measures. The book is very visual, this is especially to also reach children who cannot read. This book is distributed for free in several countries in multiple languages. The story is by Rogier van Rossem and the drawings are again provided by Peter van de Wiel.

Echo and the lost captain
'Echo and the lost captain' is an educational children’s book developed by the Herpefauna Foundation in collaboration with Healthy Seas. tackle the ghost fishing phenomenon which is responsible for the needless death of marine animals. This book tells the story of their work and and children go on an exciting adventure. The main character in this book is Echo, the dolphin that is also the Healthy Seas mascotte.

Our thanks go to Prins Petfood for their support and financial contribution in the development of the first two titles.
